For the past 10 years, Global Citizen has called for action to end extreme poverty, inspiring nearly 30M actions and $41B in dispersed funding along the way. But the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, combined with decades of neglect from our leaders and, as of late, the war in Ukraine, has wiped away years of progress.
Global Citizen has unveiled End Extreme Poverty NOW. Our Future Can’t Wait, calling on governments, private sector leaders, and billionaires to make the commitments that are so urgently needed to achieve our goal of a world free from extreme poverty.
This new, year-long campaign will call on world leaders to make the urgently needed commitments to End Extreme Poverty NOW. With major global events and urgent actions to rally millions of citizens, Global Citizen will demand that leaders stop delaying action and focus on what we need to do here and now.
What is the End Extreme Poverty NOW campaign trying to achieve?
We must end extreme poverty NOW, not by 2030. We will do this by:
- Breaking Systemic Barriers NOW: Beginning with the need to end the COVID-19 pandemic and provide urgent aid, the system must ensure health and economic justice at large, by achieving financial equity to fund essential needs and global challenges.
- Taking Climate Action NOW: Wealthy countries must keep their promises to help those already suffering from the impacts of climate change, while governments and the private sector need to take measures to keep global warming below 1.5 degrees.
- Empowering Girls NOW: The G7 and other countries must uplift teenage girls with investments in education, nutrition, healthcare – including sexual and reproductive health and rights – and address the global childcare crisis.
Why must we take climate action now?
We must make huge strides to end climate change. It is one of the biggest existential threats to all of us but especially those living in extreme poverty, already impacting those hardest who did the least to cause it.
