This workshop was to reintroduce the UK-Nigeria Climate Finance Accelerator (CFA). The CFA is a technical assistance programme funded by the UK Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS) that provides support in eight countries worldwide, to support climate change mitigation projects, to improve their bankability and to attract sustainable finance. The programme is contributing to the establishment of a permanent Climate Finance Accelerator in each country, to identify sources of finance for climate projects, thereby supporting the goals of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and creating the conditions for greater climate ambition.
Between 2017 and 2019 the CFA piloted in Nigeria – drafting pipelines, improving project bankability, tailoring support to project proponents, government, and financial institutions and identifying sources of primary and secondary finance. Given the sizeable opportunity that climate finance presents, the CFA partners want to raise the CFA’s ambition and to establish it as permanent process with a designated host institution in Nigeria.
